Bamboo Chime: Naked Mail Art*

This image is four views of a single bamboo chime. Because it is round the chime was rotated a quarter turn for each view and then the four shots were montaged into one image. The addresses have been blurred intentionally with Photoshop Elements 4. When the piece was sent the addresses were clearly visible.
Bamboo Chime
(2008)

Approx. 2 x 20 Inches (Diameter x Length)
Bamboo, Ink and Acrylic
With Digital Mail Art Stamp Attachments

The chime (above) is one of several from a Bamboo Wind Chime. The cord from the wind chime eventually fell apart with weathering. The individual chime pieces were still in reasonable condition. They had some paint on them (the green/red/white palm-like trees). I added my own drawing and painting to what was there. I also added some of my "mail art stamps".

This Bamboo Chime was sent through the US Postal System in 2008. It arrived a short time later in excellent condition.

*Naked Mail Art: The concept is simple. Use no envelope, box or other "usual" packaging material. Send an (art) object though the postal service by attaching an address directly to the object. There are many items that can be sent this way. In some cases a clear plastic bottle is used and the object or objects are placed in side. The idea is to be able to see, without obstruction, the actual item being sent.

  1. Wow... this bamboo chime is so beautiful. I like the concept of sending it through the mail system without any packaging.

  2. aloha Tonje - thank you. just to be clear... the image you see here is actually 4 views of the same piece. i rotated the piece because it is painted all around and that was the only way to see it all - then i combined all 4 views into one image.

i could easily see doing 4 different pieces all with a common motif tho - the original chime has a great deep soft sound.

the concept of "naked" mail art is great, yes. it's fun to think of these things passing through the mail system from person to person until it reaches the destination. - i like that idea a lot too.

thanks for commenting on this - it was my first attempt at "naked" mail art...

give it a try - there are lots of people who swap with this concept - sometimes a clear plastic bottle is used and items that can be seen are placed inside - the idea being that the "thing" is viewable to all.

have fun - aloha - Wrick.
